tag, you're it.

i was tagged by shishi, and i'm playing along.

if you're one of the 7 people i tag, list down 7 of your current favorite songs and then tag 7 more people.

1. walk away, franz ferdinand - because my nephew-dog Yellow sang it so well (he's a sleepcare dog, by the way)
2. buwad suka sili by junior kilat - because it's all i'll ever hear this weekend while we're together in manila. hahaha
3. jaded by aerosmith - because someone said "it has a pumpkin-esque riff with a zero-esque video"
4. capricorn by 30 seconds to mars - because jared leto apparently has a better career outside hollywood
5. gel by collective soul - because both the song and the video is a classic, sexy, edgy piece of work
6. lonely day by phantom planet - because i'm a sucker for happy-sounding angst songs sung by pretty boy slackers
7. i'm really running out of songs because my damn coworkers keep on listening to crappy songs at work

i'm tagging:
1. ais - because i miss her terribly
2. may - because it beats getting tagged by a ghost of a whisper
3. chely - because i want to shop at her website www.luckyluca.com (check it out, y'all)
4. anne - because she disappeared into the abyss with my nightmare dvd
5. i'm running out of people too because either they don't have a blog or don't know about mine
6.
7.

V for Vendetta

I've been having a cinema-going dry spell for about 4 months now. I don't remember the last time I entered a theatre before yesterday, but I'm pretty sure it was still in 2005 and I know that the first "movie-to-watch" that i missed was King Kong. go figure.

Yesterday I broke that dry spell when Karl & I watched V for Vendetta. We were both excited, because the comic was written by Alan Moore, whose other works like The Watchmen horrified me (in a good way). And boy, did we hit the big time.

This is the only reason I will give you to watch the film:

I was *sobbing* (yes, sobbing) for whole sequences, around 2-3 times throughout the movie. I don't think I've ever cried that much over a roll of film. In fact, the only time I ever remember sobbing over art was in third year high school, when I first read "This Earth of Mankind" by Pramoedya Ananta Toer. (my sister can attest to that. she walked in on me as i was closing the book.)

What affected me so much is to see people sacrifice themselves for something bigger than them, the country, in particular. I felt so much like Evey, full of fear. It's weird to have to confront emotions like that, and identify it as fear when I've always thought it was just apathy. I've been so sheltered, I didn't realize you could breed that kind of fear while living normally.

The funny thing is, "This Earth of Mankind" and the rest of the Buru Quartet deals with the same issues as "V for Vendetta." Minke also had to face his fear to stand up to Dutch colonizers. For both Evey & Minke, it took some damage to their personal lives before they made the commitment. I hope I don't have to wait that long.

So nevermind cinematography, sound editing, scoring & production design. You can be sure they were taken care of if a film was this effective.

the born loser's win

contrary to popular belief, charlie brown isn't bad at everything he does. in fact, in the peanuts book that mark recently gave me, he won against a bully in a "for keeps" marble game. the bully kept playing with amateurs claiming that the game is only "for fun" and then ends up taking all their marbles after the match. lucy & linus' youngest brother Rerun is one of the victims. Charlie then challenged the bully (knowing that his champion status is only over amateurs) and wins back all of rerun's marbles.

it's a nice reminder that we don't always have to be a loser or a victim.

landrito teeth & tailors

on the day after my first pattern-making class, my mum told me that being crafty with a sewing machine might be something that runs in the family. my maternal grandma, mama paz, always made sure my mum was in the latest fashion despite their poverty by actually making the dresses themselves. apparently, my grandpa could make a killer pair of pants, too. her classmates would ask her who made her pants, and they'd all come over to her house for a pair of trousers. and my mum's brother (the UP police one) can operate a sewing machine too. incidentally, there are also three dentists in the family - papa max and two other uncles.

so maybe when i open a shop i'll call it LANDRITO TEETH & TAILORS.

my johari window

I did this for shishi, and I'd like you to do it for me. :) Just go to the url, pick some words to describe me, and i'm on my way to using some psych tool that was first introduced to me by my Christian Living teacher in early high school.

Ms. Tanaliga's the best!
