i read this old issue (march 2004) of BARE magazine that karl gave me last friday. nice photography, have to say. but what really ticked me off was an article about religious movies and their sensual appeal by audrey carpio.
i had no problem with the main message/thought of the piece. it was this passing comment she used in the introduction that got me riled up. anyway, she was saying that as a protestant, she now finds something very seductive about catholic rituals and images. but before feeling that way about catholicism, she saw catholics as people who didn't feel guilty until it was time to confess, and that as a protestant, they were their own confessors and dealt with their sins in the middle of the night.
how can she dare assume that catholics only feign guilt and remorse when they step inside a confessional?! how can she think that we only rely on a priest to absolve us of our sins, that we don't take responsibility for our actions? and whoever said that these sins don't keep us up at night with feelings of guilt? granted, penance given by catholic priests is all too simple, but we do have the capacity to feel that there is more to be done to mend our faults.
to think i talk to protestant christians about faith and spirituality. i guess that is really assessed on an individual level.

kindly explain "cynical self-deprecation" for there is nothing self-deprecating about her article since her put-downs were not about her own faith.
in any case, i can be as offensive as i please on my own blog and she should be able to deal with such reactions since she is a published writer. i do not appreciate your pointing out the lack of christian understanding i so displayed in my post because i wasn't flaunting my unwavering catholic faith. i was merely empahasizing guilt as a human emotion not exclusive to non-confessing christians.
