lifestyle columnist awards

I was disappointed when I saw the recently-published winners of philippine star's lifestyle journalism awards, especially because most of them were not writing about on-goings in their specific segments, but writing about themselves.

i concede, though, that the winners in the two categories i entered (about philippine fashion design and about being fashionista) were better than me. the fashion design article winner was better researched than mine. her point was that philippine fashion design has no definite characteristics or "look" but is definable by quality and workmanship. the fashionista article talked about shoe addiction and how women's stature are gauged by their shoes.

the biggest let-downs were the winners for the "beauty in the 21st century" category. two articles about women overcoming insecurities, one of them from a catholic school. This catholic schoolgirl basically re-wrote the whole jawbreaker/mean girls story. what sucks is that she is also a magna cum laude graduate of my very course in UP. it shows a lack of insight.

while discussing her article with my boyfriend, we came up with 3 possible angles on beauty in this new century that would be more interesting: digital beauty, idorus (like simone the movie), genetics...

oh but god forbid we undermine what catholic schoolgirls go through to become beautiful.

anyway, i'll be posting my entries here soon.
